The PKP Class EN57 is a class of electric multiple unit built by Pafawag for the Polish State Railways (PKP).

History

The first example of the PKP Class EN57 was constructed in 1961 by Pafawag and they kept rolling out of the works until the last one was completed, and they entered service in 1962, they were sent to other various countries over the years including Yugoslavia, Croatia and Slovenia.

The Class EN57 was astonishingly successful, they were based off of the earlier EW55 units, the latter of which the EW55 units happened to be the first electric multiple units to be built with 100% domestic components, the EN57 were a step above that, they also work a bit of an interesting way, the EN57 is a three car trainset and has the traction motors on the middle car, compared to the regular EMU set which has the traction motor at either power car, the EN57's middle car has four LK 450 motors each with a power output of 145 kW, the two outer cars are both driving trailers and don't have motors in and of themselves they're distinguished the letters "A" and "B", "A" has a compressor and "B" has the batteries, each unit can take up to a capacity of 212 passengers and are capable of multiple unit operation.

Many examples of the PKP Class EN57 have gone through various upgrades over the years, not every single one of them looked the same like when they first entered service, some were modified with streamlining to make them more stylish.

Retirement and Preservation

Yugoslavia had retired their units in 1991, Croatia had retired their units in 2009 and Slovenia had retired their units as late as 2021, as for Poland, their units are still in service to this day.

One example from Poland was retired from service and that was EN57-001, the first ever production unit for the PKP Class EN57, that EMU set was preserved in Przeworsk under the protection of a conservator.
