The Osaka Municipal Subway 30 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Osaka Municipal Transport Bureau from September 1967 to October 2013 on the Midōsuji, Tanimachi, Yotsubashi, Chūō and Sennichimae Lines. This article will also describe the 7000 and 8000 series trains which act as predecessors to the 30 series, as well as the similar Kitakyu 7000 series.

History[]

The 30 series trains were created for introduction on the Tanimachi Line; a predecessor series, the 7000 and 8000 series sets were introduced in 1967 for operations on the Tanimachi Line. Two sets were manufactured and operated from September 1967. Additional 30 series sets were also manufactured for use by the Kita-Osaka Kyūkō Railway (also designated the 7000 and 8000 series), as well as for numerous other Osaka Municipal Subway lines for use as transport to and from Expo '70 in Suita, Osaka.

By 1973, the 7000 and 8000 series sets from both the Kita-Osaka Kyūkō Railway and the Osaka Municipal Transport Bureau were renumbered and reclassified the 30 series, with more cars manufactured to add onto the roster; these sets were also deployed on various other lines. 363 cars were produced in total. With the introduction of newer trains such as the 10, 20 and New 20 series trains, the 30 series trains began to diminish in use and were largely shuffled around other lines, refurbished or scrapped.

By end-1995, all 30 series sets in service were deployed on the Tanimachi Line, with sixteen sets total. Scrapping of the last 30 series sets began in 2011, with a retirement event announced in August 2013. The last sets were retired in October 2013 and scrapped.

Two cars, 3042 and 3062 are preserved, both at Morinomiya Depot; both are usually not available for public viewing although the public can view these cars during special events. 3042 has been restored to its as-built appearance as of 2015 and renumbered back to 3008; prior to its renumbering the car was painted in the Chūō Line livery. 3062 is painted in a Yotsubashi Line livery. The number plates and wheels of car 3011 are also preserved at Asaka Central Park.

Design[]

The 30 series sets feature a conventional front end with two headlights.

Specifications[]

Construction is of an aluminum alloy or stainless steel, the latter being from the older 7000 and 8000 series sets which were converted to 30 series sets. The sets used resistor-controlled traction systems.
