The Osaka Metro 10 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Osaka Municipal Transport Bureau and later Osaka Metro from February 1976 to July 2020 on the Midōsuji Line.

History[]

The 10 series trains were introduced initially as a higher-speed train for use on the Tanimachi Line; the first four-car prototype set, designated the 20 series (no relation to the later 20 series), was constructed in 1973 and was tested there and the Chūō Line to positive results. However, these tests were withdrawn due to apparent opposition by the Osaka Municipal Subway management. However, because there were some issues relating to to rising temperatures in the tunnels of the Midōsuji Line affecting their current rolling stock, it was then decided that the 20 series set would be placed into service there. Four additional intermediate cars were then constructed and placed into the set, which was renamed the 10 series; testing would begin in 1974, although full-scale revenue operation was delayed until 1976 due to potential teething problems with the train's armature chopper control system.

Operation finally began on 16 February 1976, although initial operations were limited between Nakatsu and Tennōji. Full production sets would begin construction in 1979 to replace the 30 series sets, and by 1989 234 cars had been built and were the main workhorses of the Midōsuji Line; the 30 series sets replaced by these sets were mostly redeployed to the other lines on the Osaka Municipal Subway although some were scrapped. The later batch of sets, beginning from set 1117, would be heavily refurbished and reclassified the 10A series. The 10 series sets would themselves be replaced by the 30000 series trains beginning 2011 and scrapped sequentially; the last 10 series set, 1113, would retire on 9 July 2020.

The cab section of car 1104 is preserved at Midorigi Depot.

Design[]

The 10 series sets feature a flat design with two top-mounted headlights. Initially fitted with projector beams, these were changed to orange-colored LED fixtures beginning in 2015.

Specifications[]

Construction is of an aluminum alloy. The sets use Mitsubishi armature chopper control systems which produce a low buzzing noise.
