The Okinawa Prefectural Railways Class 4 was a 0-4-0T Switcher-type narrow gauge side tank steam locomotive operated by the Okinawa Prefectural Railways from December 1921 to 1936.

History[]

The Class 4 was the second type of steam locomotive type to operate on the Okinawa Prefectural Railways. One locomotive was built by Nippon Sharyo for use on the railway, numbered 4; it had a serial number of 8 and appears to have been based on a Henschel & Son design of locomotive; it appears a number of similar locomotives were later built for use in Taiwan.

Service details of the locomotive are scant although it was withdrawn from service and scrapped in 1936 as it was apparently in very poor shape. Few photos exist of the locomotive.

Trivia[]

  • The locomotive was never given a classification by the Okinawa Prefectural Railways; this naming scheme is given for consistency and convenience.
