The Northern Pacific Class A was a class of 4-8-4 "Northern" that were built by ALCO's Schenectady Works for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1926.

History[]

In the 1900s, the Northern Pacific Railway needed an all new steam locomotive for their usage on their system, so ALCO's Schenectady Works had drew up plans for a 4-8-4 "Northern" steam locomotive for the Northern Pacific Railway, this resulted in the creation of the Northern Pacific Class A, these locomotives were constructed in 1926 and a total of twelve examples of these 4-8-4 "Northern" steam locomotives were ever constructed by ALCO's Schenectady Works, and all sixteen examples were delivered to the Northern Pacific Railway that same year.

Withdrawal of the class had occurred between 1949–1959, and the last example was out of service and all twelve examples were cut up for scrap, thus rendering them extinct.
