The Norfolk and Western No. 609 was a Class J 4-8-4"Northern" type steam locomotive built in 1943 by the railway's own Roanoke Shops for the Norfolk & Western Railroad.
It spent most of its working life hauling passenger trains.
In 1959, No. 609 was scrapped after the Norfolk & Western finally turned to using diesel locomotives when all of the J class locomotives were retired from service.
Only the whistle of the locomotive survived and was fitted on sister locomotive 611 in 2023 and remains on said locomotive as of today.
