The Norfolk and Western No. 433 is a M class 4-8-0 steam locomotive. It was built in January 1907 by Alco for the Norfolk and Western Railroad. This engine was used for freight service for much of it’s career.
No. 433 and a number of her class mates were famous for running the erstwhile and late-lamented Abingdon Branch and its mixed trains, known colloquially as the "Virginia Creeper". The track from West Jefferson, NC to Elkland was abandoned in 1933 and the last steam engine ran over the remaining line in 1956.
In 1957, #433 was donated to the city of Abingdon, Virginia where it is still on static display at the entrance to the Virginia Creeper Trail today.
