Norfolk & Western No. 1204 was one of the 43 members of the Class A 2-6-6-4 Steam Locomotive that were built by Roanoke Shops for the Norfolk & Western, No. 1204 was built in 1937 as one of the eight members of the 1937 batch of Class As. 1204 hauled fast goods trains and heavy coal trains on the flatter districts of the Norfolk & Western system. On July 7, 1942, No. 1204 had a crown sheet failure and its boiler exploded near a house. No. 1204 was "damaged beyond repair", and it was scrapped.

Trivia[]

Although No. 1204 was scrapped, No. 1218 is preserved, and remains as the sole surviving 2-6-6-4 Steam Locomotive in the world.
