Norfolk and Western No. 1118 is a Class M2 4-8-0 steam locomotive. It was built in June 1910 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Norfolk & Western Railroad where it hauled freight and coal trains.

Survival[]

In 1959, it was sold to the Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal Co., Inc. No. 1118 along with three other Norfolk & Western steam locomotives (Nos. 917, 1134, and 1151) and two Chesapeake Western diesel locomotives (Nos. 662 and 663) were left to rot and rust away in the scrapyard for over forty years becoming known as the "Lost Engines of Roanoke."

In the 2000's all of the engines were slowly removed from the Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal yard to be brought to their new homes for preservation. No. 1118s time to be rescued came on August 25, 2009 when it became the last steam locomotive in the yard, and the last known steam locomotive from a major railroad to be found in any U.S. scrapyard, to be removed and moved to its new home.

It is now owned by the Roanoke Chapter of the NRHS, but it has been moved to their maintenance facility at the 9th St. industrial park for cosmetic restoration.
