The Norfolk and Western Class Y4a (and later Class Y5) was a class of 2-8-8-2 steam locomotive Mallets with a total of 20 examples built for the Norfolk and Western Railway.

History

Beginning

In the days of steam, the Norfolk and Western Railway needed more motive power in order to tackle the issues from Second World War, so the Norfolk and Western Railway and the American Locomotive Company had went back to drawing board to design a new steam locomotive for the N&W's freight trains, this resulted in the creation of what became the Class Y4a, a total of 20 examples were constructed by N&W's Roanoke Shops.

Classification

They would be better known as the "Class Y4a", but they were re-classified as the "Class Y5" for an unknown reason.

Disposition of the Class

Withdrawal of the class began in the 1950s and the last engine was out of service in favor of diesels and every single one of them were scrapped, rendering them extinct.

Accidents and Incidents

• On June 30, 1937, No. 2092 was involved in an accident when it derailed at Maybeury, West Virginia, its whereabouts are currently unknown, but it's assumed that it was likely scrapped.
