The Norfolk and Western Class Y7 was a proposed locomotive class of 2-8-8-2 steam locomotive Mallets for the Norfolk and Western Railway.

Ideas for the design

The end result was that the Class Y7 wasn't supposed to look like the rest of the N&W Y-Class 2-8-8-2s, it was instead meant to resemble the DRGW Class L-131 2-8-8-2s but it would have a delta trailing truck has a relatively long side frame it was also meant to have a higher boiler pressure at up to 300 psi (2.1 MPa), it would also have air-compressors mounted on the front, as well as having the same cow-catcher design from their Class A 2-6-6-4s.

Why wasn't it built?

The reasons to why the Norfolk and Western Class Y7 wasn't built was that when the 1940s and 1950s had came, steam technology was considered as old-school, Diesels were rapidly taking over steam locomotives in America, the idea/notion of investing another steam locomotive wasn't a good idea, so the Norfolk and Western Railway had wounded up buying a bunch of diesels, as did pretty much every other railroad company.
