Norfolk and Western Class Y3a

The Norfolk and Western Class Y3a was a class of 2-8-8-2 steam locomotive Mallets with a total of 30 examples built for the Norfolk and Western Railway.

History[]

Beginning[]

In the days of steam, the Norfolk and Western Railway needed more motive power in order to tackle the issues from Second World War, so the Norfolk and Western Railway and the American Locomotive Company had went back to drawing board to design a new steam locomotive for the N&W's freight trains, enter the N&W Class Y3a, a total of 30 examples were constructed by ALCO's Richmond Works as copies of the USRA 2-8-8-2s.

Disposition of the Class[]

Withdrawal of the class began in the 1950s and the last engine was out of service in favor of diesels, but not all of them were scrapped, only 29 examples, Nos. 2051-2079 were cut up for scrap once the Norfolk and Western Railway had dieselized.

Preservation[]

Although, one member of the Class Y3a managed to survive into the preservation era, and that was No. 2050, the first member of the class Y3a. It was retired and was purchased by the Illinois Railway Museum where it was moved to in the 1970s.

As of today, No. 2050 currently remains on static display in Illinois Railway Museum where it is unlikely to ever run again.
