The Norfolk & Western Class O-17 was a class of two 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" type steam locomotives, that were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad in 1889 and later transferred to the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1896 when N&W absorbed the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad.
History[]
In the 1880s, as smaller railroads were evolving and later grouping into larger railroads, the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad were needing another class of locomotive for their lines, so they asked the Baldwin Locomotive Works to design a steam locomotive for them, this resulted in the creation of the Class O-17, only two examples were built Nos. 5-6, when the N&W had absorbed the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad, both locomotives were renumbered to 710-711 by the Norfolk and Western Railway.
Both Locomotives were withdrawn from active service and neither example of these two were preserved, they were both scrapped.
