The Norfolk and Western Class LC-2 was a class of four electric boxcabs built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and Westinghouse Electric for the Norfolk and Western Railway.

History[]

After World War I had come to a close, the Norfolk and Western Railway needed more electric locomotives for further development of their electrification project to improve traffic conditions on the Elkhorn grade in its Bluefield Division. And so, ALCO and Westinghouse had built and delivered a total of four twin-unit boxcabs to the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1914–1915 which they classified them as LC-2s.

They were built as an improved version of the LC-1.

After World War II had come to a close, the N&W had bypassed the existing Elkhorn Tunnel with a new tunnel twice as long as the original, double-tracked, and on a gentler and much smoother 1.4% grade. These improvements had rendered the electrification project surplus to requirements. On the opening of the new tunnel on June 26, 1950, the N&W retired all twelve of the LC-2s after their electrification was shut down, and they were all scrapped in 1950.
