This is the 1880-1881 built 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler locomotives, for the 1905-built 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives, go to Norfolk & Western Class E (1905).
The Norfolk & Western Class E was a class of eighteen 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" locomotives, that were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Shenango Valley Railroad from 1880 to 1881 and later transferred to the Norfolk and Western Railway after N&W absorbed the Shenango Valley Railroad.
History[]
In the late 1870s and the early 1880s, the Shenango Valley Railroad needed more steam locomotives for their usage on their system, so Baldwin Locomotive Works had drew up plans for a 4-6-0 steam locomotive for the Shenango Valley Railroad, this resulted in the construction of the Class E, these locomotives were constructed in from 1880 to 1881 and a total of eighteen examples of these 4-6-0 steam locomotives were ever constructed and delivered to the Shenango Valley Railroad and were numbered as 20-29, 34-41.
When the Shenango Valley Railroad was absorbed by Norfolk and Western Railway, all eighteen were transferred to the Norfolk and Western Railway and renumbered to 531-548.
Withdrawal of the class had occurred, and the last example was out of service and all eighteen were cut up for scrap, thus rendering them extinct.
