The Norfolk and Western Class B was the class of two 0-4-4 Tank Engines that were built by the Mason Machine Works for the Norfolk and Western Railway on their yard switching duties as switchers.
History[]
In the 1880s, the Norfolk and Western Railway needed another class of tank engines for use on their yard switching duties. So the Mason Machine Works had went to the drawing board and drew up plans for what would eventually become the Class B, Two examples were built, No. 96 and 97, but No. 96 was sent back to Mason Machine Works where it was converted and redesignated as the Class O-18.
Both were retired from active service on their yard switching duties and neither one of the two examples were preserved, they were both tragically scrapped, with No. 96 being scrapped as a Class O-18, and No. 97 as a Class B had followed No. 96 to oblivion later on, thus rendering the Class B extinct.
