The Nord 3.1150 (later SNCF 2-231.B.1 and later again 3-231.F.784) was an État-type 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive. Initially built for the État Railway with the will of giving her the number 231-502, the locomotive would be assigned to the Nord Railway, and would ensure express trains alongside the class 3.1151.
Description[]
Mechanical description[]
No. 3.1150, was a État-type Pacific, which was ment to become État no. 231-502. Explaining why after her construction was completed at Fives-Lille, she was identical to locomotives from the class 231-501 to 783. She is a four-cylinders compounding engine, and equipped with a Schmidt superheater. She had a front steering bogie, Ouest-type with inside frames, with wheels with a diameter of 0.96m (3.14ft), six-coupled driving axles, with wheels of a diameter of 1.94m (6.36ft), and a rear Ouest-type load-bearing axle, with a conjugated suspension coupled with the last driving axle via rockers, with wheels with a diameter of 1.23m (4.03ft). The movement of the driving wheels is driven by a Walschaert valve gear. The outside cylinder boxes are placed at the level of the second front load-bearing axle.
Like the 231-501s, no. 3.1150 had a flat semi-overflow firebox type "Crampton" with a trapezoidal grid (adapted to the gauge of the lines of the former Ouest Railway), with a surface of 4.27m² (46ft²). That firebox heats a 16 bars (232.06 psi) stamped boiler, the whole offering a total heating surface of 211.9m² (2,281ft²). The locomotive was fitted with a Nord-type exhaust. The regulator dome was placed on top of the boiler's third ferrule, while the sandpit dome was located on the fifth ferrule. The safety valve is on the firebox, with the whistle on top of It.
Later the Nord Railway would carried some modifications on no. 3.1150:
- Installation of an ACFI water prehater;
- Exchange of the original Nord-type exhaust for a trefoil 3-jet PLM-type one;
- Installation of small smoke deflectors, later replaced by bigger ones with an aerodynamic shape;
- Installations of Willotaux-type valve gear for the low pressure cylinders;
In 1947, when she was transferred to the Ouest Region, she was modified yet again to be the same type as the 3-231.Fs. And she gained the number 3-231.F.784.
Liveries[]
Under Nord Ownership, no. 3.1150 was painted in the Nord chocolate brown livery. The boiler, fire box, cylinders and sides cab were painted in chocolate brown, with the exception of the smoke box, and the frames painted in black. The wheels were painted in chcolate brown. Yellow lining were painted on the foot plate sides, the cab sides, the splashers, the cylinders, four framing the boiler circles, and later on the smoke deflectors. The buffer beams was painted in red, with the number of the locomotive being made of brass plates in relief painted in yellow. On the second splasher was again brass relief numbers with the locomotive number painted in yellow, on the first spasher was the name of the company in brass relief letters painted in yellow. The name of the company was indicated on the smoke deflectors, with the same brass relief letters painted in yellow. On the cab side there was the name of the allocated shed of the engine paintezd in white.
Under SNCF ownership, we don't know which livery no. 2-231.B.1 would have wore when being in service on the Northern Region. It is likely that she kept her Nord livery during the 1940's. When she was allocated on the Western Region and was renumbered to 3-231.F.784, she was painted with the SNCF Western Region livery. She received a dark celtic green coat on her boiler, fire box and cab sides, while the smoke box, the smoke defletors, the chassis, and the wheels were painted in Black. Yellow lining were applied on the smoke deflectors, boiler, foot plate sides, and on the cab sides. Her buffer beam was painted in red encircled with a white strip, on it was indicated the numbers of the Pacific, on top of the buffers, painted in white, on the left side of the buffer beam was painted the Region number, and on the right side was painted in white the SNCF logo. On the Northern Region the cab sides received the number of the locomotive painted in white, with the allocated shed on top of It; on the Western Region, a number plate, made of Zamak was fitted there, the background of It painted in red with the lettering painted in yellow.
