The Nilgiri Mountain Railway X Class are 3f281\1m000\MetreGage Rack+Pinion 0-8-2T Coal\OilFired CompoundSteam lokomotives, built 1914 by SwissLokMachinWorks\SLMW of SwitzerLand.Winterthur in 2 batches for the NilgiriMountainRailway\NMR X Class roster in southern India. These replaced older BeyerPeacock 2-4-0 loks, which were too weak for the steep grades on the NMR.
Lokomotive X37399 was rebuilt in the NMR CentralWorkShop at Tiruchirapalli.Ponmalai & put back into service 2014Mar05. As of 2019, their are 4 NMR X Class lokos in service.

- NMR X Class are compound loks with 2 HighPressure + 2 LowPressure cylinders, all mounted outside the frame; the LowPressureCylinders power the RackDrivers & are above the HighPressureCylinders which power the RailDrivers.
- NMR#X37395 was converted from CoalFired to OilFired in 2002; 1 other has been converted & NMR is looking to convert all steam loks to OilFired; CoalFired loks need 2 FireMen, while OilFired lok need only 1 FireMan to accompany the driver as shoveling coal to the boiler is not required.
