Nickel Plate Road No. 770 is a class S-3 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive, built in 1949 by Lima to handle freight trains over the Nickel Plate Road's former Lake Erie & Western route between Frankfort, IN and Peoria, IL.
On December 28, 1954, it double headed a freight train with #776 when they both crashed in a head-on collision at Plate, NY, near Dunkirk.
After the crash No. 770 was retired from service and was put in storage until 1961 when it was sold for scrap.
