The Nickel Plate Road Class L1 was a class of 4-6-4 "Hudson" type steam locomotives built for the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad (or better known as Nickel Plate Road).
History[]
The Class L1 was divided into three subclasses, those being L1, L1-a and L1-b. The Class L1 and Class L1-a were built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), while the Class L1-b was built by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio.
Preservation[]
Only one member of the class, No. 170, has survived into preservation. It was retired from service in 1957 and was donated to the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri, where it remains on public display today.
