New York Central No. 5500 was an S-2a class 4-8-4 "Niagara" (Northern) type steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1946 for the New York Central Railroad (NYC). It is one of 27 of these steamers built for the NYC between 1945 and 1946 for their passenger services. However, unlike the other members of the Niagara class, it is the only one to be equipped with Franklin-Caprotti Poppet Valve Gear instead of Baker Valve Gear. Because of this, it was essentially dubbed the "Super Niagara".
Sadly, like all of the other Niagara locomotives, it was retired from the NYC sometime between 1951 and 1956 and ultimately scrapped along with all of its siblings.
