Nyc5444

No. 5444 in Detroit around 1940.

New York Central No. 5444 was a J-3a class 4-6-4 "Hudson" Type steam locomotive. It was built in December 1937 by the American Locomotive Company for the New York Central Railroad. No. 5444 was the last non-streamlined Hudson constructed, before 5445, which was streamlined as built.

It was used for high-speed passenger service on the New York Central's crack passenger trains, such as the 20th Century Limited for much of its career.

This engine was taken out of service in 1954 and sold for scrap later that same year.
