
New York Central class L3a 4-8-2 Mohawk-type #3000, eastbound from Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago with a ten-car mail and express extra.
New York Central 3000 is a Class L-3a 4-8-2 Mohawk-type steam locomotive it was built by Alco in October 1940 for the New York Central.
This locomotive was designed to haul passenger trains, including the 20th Century Limited for the New York Central. No. 3000 was also often used to haul freight trains when its needed. It was also the First Locomotive of the New L-3a Class, standing next to its sister, New York Central #3001 as the second.
No. 3000 was finally retired from service in April 1957, and was sold away for scrap sometime later.

- This locomotive, #3000, paved the way for the final two classes of Mohawks on the Central, the L-3 and L-4. #3000 was also the first "Modern Mohawk" of the L-3 Design since the Late Development of the L-2d in 1930.
