The New Tram 100 series is a Japanese rubber-tired light rail automated guideway transit operated by the Osaka Municipal Transport Bureau from March 1981 to 2001 on the Nankō Port Town Line.
History[]
The 100 series trains were the first trains introduced on the Nankō Port Town Line, and were somewhat related to the 8000 series trains used on the Kobe New Transit system. These were supplemented by the 100A series trains in 1991; the 100 series trains would then be largely replaced by the 100A series as the trains used steel bodies and were prone to salt corrosion as the line ran near beaches and shores. All 100 series trains were retired by 2001 and scrapped shortly after.
One car, 101-16, is preserved at Midorigi Depot; it is not normally open for public viewing apart from special events.
Design[]
The 100 series use a simple body with red and blue accents. The train's headlights are located on the pilot.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. The sets use a thyristor drive system. Tires were originally urethane tires, but these were changed in 1982 to standard tires as the ride quality was noted to be poor.
Incidents[]
On 15 October 1993, the control systems of set 101-13 failed at Suminoekōen Station, the terminus station (the line was fully-automated beginning 1991); the train failed to stop and crashed into a bollard, causing significant damage to the cab car. 215 passengers were injured and operations on the line were suspended for some weeks. When operations resumed in November 1993, a "tour conductor" (equivalent to a driver) was put on every train to drive the train manually. Fully-automated operation resumed in 2000, with manual control rarely occurring since. Due to this accident, the fleet numbers of the later 200 series trains intentionally omit the number 13.
