A total of 35 examples of what became the New Haven Railroad Class Y-3 were ever built by the American Locomotive Company's Schenectady Works, ten examples were built in 1920, then an additional twenty examples were built 1922 and the final five examples were built in 1923, the class was delivered to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (or better known as the New Haven Railroad) and had entered service after they were constructed primarily working Switching assignments.
The twenty examples that were built in 1922 initially had Hew Haven lettering on their tenders but were delivered to the Central New England and were numbered by Central New England as 13-32 and would later be passed onto New Haven Railroad where they were renumbered by New Haven as 3415-3434.
All members of the class were withdrawn from service and not a single one of the New Haven Railroad's Class Y-3 were preserved, they were all cut up for scrap when the New Haven Railroad had dieselized.
All that's left of the New Haven Railroad's Class Y-3 is one surviving USRA 0-8-0 locomotive, which is Republic Steel Corp. No. 285, that locomotive is currently on static display at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, Kentucky.
