The Nambu Railway Class 1001 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Nambu Railway and later the Japanese National Railways from 1928 to 1971.

History[]

The Class 1001 was an early electric locomotive used in Japan. Four locomotives were manufactured by Hitachi from 1928 to 1929 for the Nambu Railway; these entered service in 1928. These were numbered 1001 through 1004 and featured a design based on the ED15 and Fuji Minobu's Class 210 locomotives in design but featured a number of differences in specifications and performance. The locomotives were used to pull freight trains; they not only operated within the Nambu Railway but also performed through-running to the Odakyu Electric Railway via the Ōme Electric Railway.

With the Nambu Railway's nationalization in 1944, the locomotives were acquired by the Japanese National Railways; they initially operated with no changes in numbers or classification and were placed in the Nishi National Locomotive District. They were reclassified as the JNR Class ED34 with vehicle naming regulations coming into force in 1952 and renumbered ED34 1 through ED34 4. The locomotives were reclassified in October 1961 as the JNR Class ED27 and numbered ED27 11 through ED27 14; this was the second type of locomotive to bear the classification following a series of two steeplecab switcher locomotives acquired from the Miyagi Electric Railway. The locomotives were withdrawn in 1971.

No ED27s have been preserved.

Specifications[]

The Class 1001 used a nose suspension drive system. JIH60 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
