New South Wales Government Railway No. 6039 is a 4-8-4+4-8-4 type steam locomotive that sits in storage at the Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum in Dorrigo, New South Wales, Australia.
History[]
Built by Beyer Peacock & Co. in 1956 for the New South Wales Government Railways this was one of 50 locos that were ordered but the order was later reduced to 42. The unassembled parts of the other 8 were delivered as spares. 30 of the class were later fitted with dual controls to eliminate use of turntables. There light axle load allowed them to work on most branch lines.
Withdrawn from service in 1972 it was sold to the Dorrigo museum in 1974 where it sits in storage while waiting for restoration to operating condition.
Trivia[]
- The first Garratt was built by Beyer Peacock and supplied to Tasmania. It still exists and has recently been restored to working order on the Ffestiniog Railway in the UK, although it is presently on the rebuilt Welsh Highland Railway, based in Caernarfon.
