Locomotive Wiki

Mt Lyell railway No.5 is the last of the Mt Lyell abt locomotives to be built for the railway.

History[]

Mt Lyell No.5 also known as Abt No.5 was built in 1938 as builders number 24418 being the youngest of the Mt Lyell Abt locomotives. The engine mainly pulled passenger trains and occasional mineral traffic and shunting duties. It was a site for sore eyes when it arrived after the last locomotive Abt No.4 which was a complete failure. After the closer of the railway in 1963 the locomotive was purchased by the ARHS ( Australian Railway Historical Society) and moved to their Menzies Creek Museum in Victoria on the Puffing Billy Railway and put on display with a Mt Lyell brake van. Then it was overhauled in 2003 and know operates on the West Coast Wilderness Railway which is the Mt Lyell railway but renamed.
