The Mount Emily Lumber Company No. 1 is a 3 truck shay that was originally owned by the Mount Emily Lumber Company.

History[]

Built in 1923 by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Hofus Steel & Equipment Co. at Seattle, WA. It was later Sold to the Independence Logging Co. at Independence, WA, then later Sold to the Mount Emily Lumber Co. at La Grande, OR.

When it was retired in 1957, it was Donated to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, then 1 year later in 1958, it was Donated to the Oregon Historical Society at Portland, OR.

The engine is operational at the City of Prineville RR in Prineville, OR, but it was announced in 2022 that the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation will be the new owners of #1. The ORHF hopes to have the locomotive running their holiday express as soon as 2023.
