"MoHa 10 series" is a term used to refer to a type of early electric multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways.

History

The term "MoHa 10 series" refers to a set of what would ultimately become 233 railcars operated by the JNR. The term itself refers to a set of three different types of railcars with the same general designation; these will be detailed below.

First generation

194 ex-DeHa 63100 series were renumbered to MoHa 11 series cars with the 1 October 1928 naming regulations taking effect; the number of the car post-renumbering corresponded to the car's number pre-renumbering (i.e. DeHa 63101 became MoHa 10001). The 194 cars comprised of the 123 cars manufactured from 1924 to 1926 and 72 ex-DeHa 43200 series cars manufactured from 1922 to 1923. Some cars were later rebuilt at Takatori Works into MoNi 53 series cars from 1937. All were withdrawn from service by 1952.

Second generation

34 ex-30 series cars were reclassified as the MoHa 10 series in 1953. These were modified by having their cab ends removed and converting them into intermediate cars. Other modifications, such as the installation of new roofs, was also performed. The last of the cars to retire were MoHa 10007, 10013, 10050, 10052 and 10056 in 1968.

Ex-Toyokawa Railway and Horaiji Railway

Main article: Toyokawa Railway MoHa 10 series

A series of five electric multiple units operated by the Horaiji Railway and Toyokawa Railway. These were acquired by the JNR when the Toyokawa Railway was nationalized in 1941. All were withdrawn from JNR service by 1951 due to a lack of spare parts and thus were not given new designations, having been retired before the naming regulations came into effect.
