The Miyagi Electric Railway Class Ki 1 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Miyagi Electric Railway and later other railway companies from 1924 to 1961.
History[]
The Class Ki 1 was an early electric locomotive used in Japan. Operated by the Miyagi Electric Railway, the preceding operator of what is now the East Japan Railway Company's Senseki Line, two locomotives were manufactured in 1924 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works with Westinghouse electrical equipment. Both locomotives featured slightly different equipment. Ki 2 was rebuilt into a Class KiWa 2 self-propelled freight car in 1929 by Nippon Sharyo. The locomotives were reclassified as Class ED27 some time after and renumbered ED27 1 and 2.
The railway was acquired by the Japanese National Railways in 1944. Both locomotives were transferred to the Senseki Line in 1950, with their voltage boosted to 1,500 V DC from 600 V DC. Both locomotives were withdrawn in 1961. ED27 1 was stored at Takatori Works for use as a training vehicle for some time but was later scrapped.
Specifications[]
The Class Ki 1 used a nose suspension drive system. Westinghouse WH-550-JE6 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
