The Milwaukee Road class L2 were 2-8-2 or "Mikado"-type steam locomotives built by or for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad ("The Milwaukee Road") in the period 1912–1923.

Design History and Statistics[]

After the Success of the Chicago, Milwaukee and Puget Sound's first series of 2-8-2 Mikado's, the L-1's which debuted in April 1909, they did very Well in the Mountainous Freight and Helper services for which they were Intended for as the Milwaukee Shops developed a better Steaming Version, the L-2. The First L-2 was slightly bigger than the Older L-1, although not by Much, but had Improved Baker Valve Gear for the ease of Maintenance as Drawn up in Blueprints. The First Locomotive was Completed as Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Ry. #8000 (Quickly renumbered as the #1800) in July 1912. Being a better and more Powerful Locomotive than the First 2-8-2's on the Lines, many were needed. So, Four Major Builders built all of these Impressive Mikado's between 1912 and 1923. However, there were three sub-classes of the class L2: the first Production L2's properly comprised Forty locomotives, built by Milwaukee Road's Milwaukee, WI, Shops in 1912–13 they were all Delivered with Baker Valve Gear as Hand-Fired although a chunk were fit with Mechanical Stokers during the 1920's. These Locomotives were fit with Inner-Frame Spoked Trailing Wheels. One hundred and Fifteen were Built by the American Locomotive Company's Brooks Works in 1912, and Twenty-five by American Locomotive Company's Schenectady Works in 1914. They were followed by One hundred class L2-a's built by Baldwin in 1920 to 1921, and with a Final order of One Hundred class L2-b's built by the Same Builder in 1922 to 1923. The L2-a's and b's were all fit with Mechanical Stokers and Outside-framed Hodges Style Trailing Trucks along with Walschaerts Valve Gear. All Three-hundred and Eighty units were delivered with the Same Boiler Measurements along with large 26" x 30" Cylinders fed through 14" Piston Valves.

Service Lives and the War Years[]

As the first L-2 Locomotives were Delivered in 1912, they became the Ideal the Principal Freight Haulers on the Milwaukee as for decades they were used just about Everywhere and were Popular with Engine Crews. After 1916 during the Great War the Chicago, Milwaukee and Saint Paul became the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific as Lines completed out West towards Montana, Washington, being able to Expand Electric-Operated Passenger Service. The L2's of all Subclasses were considered to have been one of the Best Steam Locomotive Types the Milwaukee ever Rostered, even later on when newer Types of Power were Introduced, the S Class 4-8-4's also became a Favorite to Milwaukee Crews alike. In the early 1920s more were Built as quite a few rolled out of the Milwaukee Shops and the American Locomotive Company's plants, but the largest Overall supplier was the Baldwin Locomotive Works who built most of them as Two major Subclasses were fit with Mechanical Stokers and Outside-Framed Trailing Trucks which became a more well-conceived Improvement off the Slightly Older L-2's. Between 1920 and 1923 in Three years respectively, the Baldwin Works would build Two-hundred engines finishing off the Mikado Roster in General. In July 1926, the Milwaukee Road had two major Holdings of Records, was that by this point since the First decade of the Twentieth Century, the Milwaukee managed to build more than Six-hundred Miles of Electrified Lines out West and having around Five-Hundred 2-8-2's on the Roster Total which became another one of America's largest Mikado Fleets. Although the Milwaukee Road struggled with financial difficulties after acquiring thousands of Freight Cars and One-hundred Heavy Mikes during and After World War I under USRA Control under Government Pressure as expectations and routes Gradually Expanded, the Railroad took really Good Care of them and kept them up to Date. After the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the Milwaukee began putting many into Storage as Lack of Funds and Employment kept all of them Steaming. The First overall L-2 unit would leave the Roster in September 1930 for unknown Reasons as likely lack of Work or needing the Profits. However, though a chunk of about Forty-two Locomotives were already Retired or Sold for Scrapping prior to the January 1938 Renumbering's. Another Chunk of the earlier L-2's were fit with Mechanical Stokers with the Motors located under the Fireman's Side of the Cab as to keep them up to Date and the Shops Crews Busy as most of the Conversions were Duplex Stokers. However, very Few of the Locomotives were converted to Oil Burners before 1940 for use out West by mounting Riveted Oil Tanks in place of the Coal Areas, not much was ever said about them besides Tender Swaps for farther distances, but almost all Milwaukee's Freighters were Coal-Fired. Many were still in Service by the early 1940's as they were found also in some Switching Services substituting, they're Cowcatchers with Foot-Board Pilots. As the pressure of Increased Workloads appeared after America's entry into World War II, more than two hundred were still in service as only very few were Retired during World War II as the Milwaukee couldn't afford to Scrap many as they were Reliable, and the Railroad needed any Freight Power to keep up with the Demands of the War Effort. Used everywhere for any role they could keep busy in, even being a Freight Design, they could haul well even in Passenger/Troop services during the War as they could pull almost as much as a Pair of F Class Pacific's in the Doubled Workloads during the Harsh period. Even when the Men were away from they're assigned Roles during the War Emergency drafts, Women also were assigned to Clean and Maintain the Mikes to keep them Well-kept up in the Game.

Tinkering with the Mikes[]

Despite the L classes not being such a Subject like a prototype Project, during the late 1920's to late 1930's it was known that the Milwaukee Road actually Tinkered with several L-2 Locomotives. One such example was L2 class #1884, which was fit with an Elesco Feed-water Heater as an Experiment after the late 1920's as it was the only one of all the Subclasses to be so well Equipped. The Milwaukee Road was not a Fan of the Elesco Feed-Water System like other such railroads, but several of the L-3 USRA units were fit with them as they proved to Function Well but was not Popular enough to have many more Installed. At least one Trailing Truck Booster Engine was fit to a L-2b although several were fit more on the L-3's as they were Big enough. Strangely, during this decade, one L2 the #1868 was fit with an Experimental Long-lengthen Straight Stack likely fit in the Smokebox with larger Exhaust Nozzles. This Test for such a funnel did not Last Long as before the Middle stages of World War II it was already Removed and converted back to a Regular Straight Stack. However more unusual additions would be added later in the 1940's as few of the L-2's and a Majority of the L-3's were Fit with Mars Warning Lights on the Smokebox top in front of they're Stacks for Safety signals to be used in several Passenger Services.

The Postwar Years and Retirement[]

After the end of the War in September 1945, the L2's remained in any Roles possible until Traffic slowed down within the next few years. It is noted that in the later Years they had an All-Black Paint Scheme with Graphite Firebox sides with covered or uncovered Smokeboxes, Brass Bells, with White Lettering and a Red tilted Square Logo for the 'Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific'. Very few Retirements were made after the War until the Late 1940's when Diesel-Electric Restrictions were lifted as Major Retirements picked up by 1949. About half a Roster of the L2's remained Active after 1950 in the Milwaukee's final decade of Steam Operations. With the major Use of new Freight Diesels all Retirements for the L2's and L2a's were made by December 1954. The L2b's and L3's were the longest Lived of all Milwaukee 2-8-2's in General as they were Retired by January 1956 as the final Nineteen were Retired altogether as a Group that Month as later that Year All Regular Steam Operations ended System-wide in the Autumn of 1956 with the Final Run made by C.M.St.P.&.P. #1004 (G8 Class 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler) in April 1957 near Minnesota.

Numbering[]

L2 - When originally built, the Milwaukee Shops locomotives had been allocated 1800–1839, however only the first seven carried these numbered before the allocation became 8000–8039. Similarly, only the first 50 Brooks locomotives received their 1840–1889 numbers, before their allocation was changed to 8040–8154. The Schenectady engines were numbered 8155–8179.

Trivia[]

  • Unfortunately after the Last Steam Operation took place in April 1957 on the Milwaukee system-wide, none of the L2 Mikado's survived to preservation.
  • The L2s were known to be amongst one of the Finest Steam Locomotive Designs the Milwaukee Road ever Rostered along with the S-3 Class 4-8-4's.
  • As that the Milwaukee did not Use Oil as often as the C&NW had, the Railroad converted some of the L's into Oil Burners for use out West along with the Road's N Class Mallets.
  • The L2 subclasses were the Largest-Quantified batch of Mikado's on the Railroad and were one of the most Numerous Locomotive Classes the Milwaukee owned in the Twentieth Century.
