The Mass Rapid Transit, colloquially known as the MRT, is Singapore's rapid transit system and the main mode of rail transport throughout Singapore. It is the oldest, busiest and most comprehensive metro system in Southeast Asia.

History[]

The origins of the Mass Rapid Transit date back to around 1967, when a feasibility study was conducted by planners at the time, forecasting a need for a rapid transit system by around 1992. A bus-only system was initially considered but was declared unfeasible.

The Mass Rapid Transit Corporation, now SMRT Trains, was founded in 1983 to construct and manage the network, with the North-South Line given priority due to increased demand due to the route passing through the Central districts of the country. The first section of the Mass Rapid Transit, a 3.7 mi (6 km) stretch of stations between Yio Chu Kang and Toa Payoh, opened on 7 November 1987. The network has been expanded significantly since then and now has a total of six lines spanning 134 operational stations, 30 of which are interchange stations.

At least two additional lines are under construction or in planning stages.

Network[]

The network comprises of 144 mi (231 km) of route on standard gauge. It is fully automated with an extensive driverless rapid transit network. The lines are operated by two companies: SMRT Trains and SBS Transit, with the majority of lines operated by SMRT.

A total of six lines are in operation, with at least two more under construction or under planning.

Rolling stock[]

The network's rolling stock is comprised of fixed-length rapid transit trains. Rolling stock is contracted by open tender, with the contract numbers for the tenders being the most common name used to refer to the each of the rolling stock.

North South and East West Lines[]

All rolling stock on this line is operated by SMRT Trains.
