Winston Churchill at the Black Country Museum

The Manning Wardle L Class are a class of 0-6-0ST locomotives built primarily for industrial use.

Construction[]

The class were built over a 45 year period between 1881 and 1926 by Manning, Wardle & Co. of Leeds. The class was supplied to various civil engineering contracting firms in the UK. The later versions of this locomotive were built with an enclosed cab.

Preserved Examples[]

There are at least 3 preserved example of this type.

Works no. 1210 of 1891 'Sir Berkeley' is owned by the Vintage Carriages Trust and is on long-term loan to the Middleton Railway in Leeds where it is nearing the end of a 10-yearly overhaul. It should return in spring 2022 in Logan and Hemmingway Contractor's livery.

Works no. 1601 of 1903 'Matthew Murray' is now on static display at the Middleton Railway after its 10-year boiler ticket expired in 2021. At present it is planned to be on static display for the forseeable future.

Works no. 2025 of 1923 'Winston Churchill' can be found on static display outside the Black Country Museum in Dudley, West Midlands.

Trivia[]

  • Billy and Charlie from Thomas & Friends are both basis on the Manning Wardle L Class tank locomotive.
