"Q-Train" is a colloquial name used to describe the Urban Lines Vision Train, a set of city commuter electric multiple units operated by the MTR Corporation on the Kwun Tong Line of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway since November 2022.
History[]
The Q-Train was designed for service on various urban lines, such as the Kwun Tong, Island, Tsuen Wan and Tseung Kwan O Lines, replacing M-Trains on these lines. A total of ninety-three sets were ordered by the MTR Corporation under contract C6014-14E in July 2015. The sets are built by CRRC Qingdao Sifang in Qingdao, China.
Operations began on the Kwun Tong Line on 27 November 2022 after a period of testing, with set A753~A754 pulling the inaugural service on 27 November 2022. Also planned to be put into service on the Island, Tsuen Wan and Tseung Kwan O Lines, the first Q-Trains entered service on the Island Line on 28 January 2024, with set A769~A770 pulling the inaugural service from Chai Wan Station. The sets are currently stationed at Kowloon Bay and Chai Wan depots when not in use, although they will be stationed at Tsuen Wan and Tseung Kwan O depots when they enter service on those lines.
Design[]
The Q-Trains feature a streamlined design with quadrant-shaped headlights. They feature a silver body with black and red accents, MTR's corporate colors. A red LED display above the driver's side window acts as a destination indicator while the opposite window features a warm orange eight-segment display to display the train running number.
The sets feature a design similar to that of the S-Trains used on the South Island Line; their design has been criticized as being "uninspired".
Specifications[]
Construction of the sets is of stainless steel. The sets use Mitsubishi MAP-134-15VD305 IGBT variable frequency drives, powering Mitsubishi MB-5153-B three-phase AC induction traction motors. The cars sit on CRRC Qingdao Sifang SDA-140 bogies.
