Nutty is an 0-4-0 Vertical boilered narrow gauge steam locomotive.

History[]

Nutty was built in 1929 by Sentinel Wagon Works as their works number 7701 in 2 ft gauge for use on the London Brick Company's railway network at Farcett, Peterborough. To keep the height as low as possible, the engine was mounted horizontally and the boiler close to the ground. It was then Named "Nutty" after driver and mechanic "Nutty" Rowell, who kept remained it in service for 30 years.

After withdrawn from brickworks use, It was then donated to the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum in Tywyn in 1964, initially loaned to the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway for active service, and converted to 2 ft 6in gauge. In the 1970s it was withdrawn from service at WLLR and moved to Tywyn and stored in a gunpowder store building, which was occasionally taken out of service. It was later moved to a temporary building behind the Old Museum.

In 1991, a lease agreement was signed with Whipsnade Wild Animal Park for the Great Whipsnade Railway to restore it. The locomotive was dismantled and the boiler sent to Wilstead for inspection. Work was then completed in 1994 and the dismantled locomotive was transferred to Railworld in Peterborough, where it was hoped it would be put on display. In 1996 it was transferred to the engineering works in Peterborough, where it was reassembled and externally restored by Nutty Rowell's grandson, Mark Lock. However, the exhibition at Railworld did not materialise and the museum began looking for an alternative site for Nutty.

As a result, it was agreed in 2012 to loan Nutty to the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway for a five-year static exhibition. It is currently in static display at the Stonehenge Works station.
