Amtrak P42DCs No. 66 (Phase II) and 156 (Phase I) were both wrecked in two separate accidents and later deemed damaged beyond repair. 66 was scrapped in 2018 and 156 was scrapped in 2021, making them the first two Amtrak heritage units to be scrapped including the 822 in Phase III P40DC.
Norfolk Southern SD45-2 No. 1700 is the only SD45-2 locomotive on NS's current roster to be designated as a heritage unit.
In 1994, Norfolk Southern GP59 No. 4610 was repainted into a Southern Railway livery and designated as a heritage unit. But in 2012, it was repainted into a special Norfolk Southern Operation Lifesaver livery, thus losing its status as a Norfolk Southern heritage unit.
On December 12, 2021, Norfolk Southern ES44AC No. 8099 struck a rockslide on the tracks and derailed on its left side. Due to the damage, it sustained from the derailment, many people thought it was deemed damaged beyond repair. But thankfully, the damage was found to be repairable, as it eventually returned to service on May 10, 2023.
In March 2023, Amtrak P42DC No. 184 was repainted back into the regular Amtrak phase V livery (or scrapped beyond repair), thus losing its status as an Amtrak heritage unit.
In May 2023, CSX outshopped ES44AH No. 1827, originally No. 3059, in a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad heritage livery, which had angered a bunch of railfans due to the cab area staying painted in YN3C. Amtrak P42DC No. 164 was painted back into the Phase IV Livery from the Beech Grove Shops, outside Indianapolis.
