The Light Rail Transit, colloquially known as the LRT, is Singapore's automated guideway transit system. The service acts as a feeder service to the heavy rail Mass Rapid Transit system, being situated mostly in Singapore's "new towns".

History[]

The origins of the Light Rail Transit date back to around 1991, which proposed a new type of transport system which could be used to serve "new towns" around the country. A feasibility study was conducted shortly after, with the government announcing their intentions to pilot a light rail system around three of these "new towns": Bukit Panjang, Sengkang and Buona Vista.

Study trips would be made to the SK and VAL people movers in France to develop the system. The first LRT line would open in Bukit Panjang in 1999, followed by two additional LRT lines in Sengkang and Punggol in 2003 and 2005 respectively. The lines are currently owned by the Land Transport Authority.

There are no additional plans to expand the LRT system, apart from linking existing LRT stations to the wider MRT network and procuring new rolling stock to replace older rolling stock.

Network[]

The network comprises of 18 mi (28 km) of route. Each line is fully automated with trains running singly or in two-car pairs. The lines are operated by two companies: SMRT Trains and SBS Transit, with the majority of lines operated by SBS Transit.

Rolling stock[]

The network's rolling stock is comprised of fixed-length rubber-tired light rail vehicles. Rolling stock is contracted by open tender, with the contract numbers for the tenders being the most common name used to refer to the each of the rolling stock.
