Joem was built in 1951 at Darlington Works to the North Eastern Railway E1 Class (LNER J72 Class) design for shunting on British Railway being part of the last batch of this design. It was numbered 69023 and operated as a shunter until 1964 when it was used for departmental work and numbered 59 it was used for di-freezing rolling stock, loco mechanisms and points. In 1966 it was withdrawn and sold to R. Ainsworth for preservation and named Joem after his parents. It steamed to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in 1969. Eventually Jeom was donated to the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) who have operated on many railways since. As of April in 2020 Joem is still undergoing an active overhaul.
