The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for light mixed traffic. A total of 218 of them were built between 1946 and 1953 and were classified as 2F, BR 2MT. One of these 218 locomotives was No. 46447 which was built at Crewe Works in 1950.
No. 46447 was first allocated to Crewe North, not far from its birthplace of Crewe Works, though moved to Workington within months to replace many ageing LNWR Webb 'Cauliflower' 0-6-0s locomotives in the local area. Over the years it was moved to various sheds in North Wales and Derbyshire, right up until its withdrawal from service in 1966. In 1967 the locomotive was sold to Woodham Brothers at Barry for scrap. No. 46447 became the 20th locomotive to leave the Barry Scrapyard once it was rescued by the Ivatt Locomotive Trust in 1972 and was moved to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.
After some time in storage, No. 46447 was later moved to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in 2008 as a potential candidate for restoration. In 2012, an agreement was made between the East Somerset Railway and the Isle of Wight which saw No. 46447 move to Cranmore in exchange for LB&SCR E1 No. 32110 'Burgundy'. It arrived at Cranmore in 2012 for restoration and hauled its first passenger trains during a day of celebration at the East Somerset Railway in 2014.
No. 46447 is still currently running on the East Somerset Railway on a ten year loan.
