The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) No. 41298 is a 2-6-2T LMS Class 2MT tank engine preserved at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

Operational History[]

No. 41298 was built at Crewe Works in 1951 with all but 10 engines of the same design and was first allocated to shunt stock at Bricklayer’s Arms on the Southern Region, London.

In 1953 No. 41298 was transferred to Devon for work on the branch lines around Barnstaple. Ten years later it was moved to Weymouth for employment on boat-train and local passenger turns.

A final move took place in October 1966, this time to Nine Elms where its last few months in British Railways (BR) ownership were spent on empty stock workings as a station pilot.

By July 1967, steam power was no longer in use in the Southern Region so No. 41298 was withdrawn from service.

Preservation[]

No. 41298 was purchased for preservation in 1967 directly from BR by The Ivatt Locomotive Trust. No. 41298’s first home in preservation was at the Longmoor Military Railway in Hampshire, before moving to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in 1970 after Longmoor closed down.

In 2008, a decision to move the Ivatt Trust's collection to the Isle of Wight was settled and No. 41298 was moved to the Isle of Wight on November 28. In 2009, The Ivatt Locomotive Trust generously transferred ownership of No. 41298 and their other locomotives to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

After a complete overhaul, No. 41298 ran for the first time in preservation and hauled its first passenger trains on the line during September 2015. It has remained in regular service ever since.
