History[]
No.1708 was built in 1880 at Derby Works of the Midland Railway as part of lot number 262 to the design of Samuel W. Johnson's 1377 class (later known as 1F by the LMS) originally as number 1418. It operated until 1923 when the London Midland Scottish Railway took over the Midland Railway and continued to operate until 1947 when British Railways took over the LMS.[1][2][3][4][5]
It was one of the last 1F class to be withdrawn in 1965. At first being preserved at the Midland Railway - Butterley heritage line, then the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and then the Swanage Railway and finally for display at Barrow Hill Engine Sheds. In November 2020 the locomotive began to be restored to operation.[1][2][3][4][5]
