The London Midland Scottish Railway 5F Class are 2-6-0 tender steam locomotives known as "Hughes Crabs".

History[]

The 5F class are a class of two-hundred-forty-five tender 2-6-0 locomotives. The 5F class nicknamed the Hughes Crabs were designed by George Hughes for mixed-traffic operations inspired by the Caledonian Railway's 2-6-0 mogul designs. The class were built from 1926 until 1932 some were fitted with Lentz valve gear in 1931 the five engines fitted with such had them converted to Reidinger valve gear.[1][2][3][4][5]

When the next mechanical engineer of the LMS William Stanier was asked to construct more Hughes Crab, however planned to have them fitted with a different boiler, then later other modifications came to Stanier's mind and the alterations became a new class of 2-6-0s which replaced the Hughes Crabs. All of the class managed to survive into British Railways ownership from 1948 until 1961 when withdrawals began with the last two No.42727 and 42942 when were withdrawn from service in 1967, a year before steam ended officially on British Railways.[1][2][3][4][5]

Preservation[]

Three of the class have been preserved though none are currently operational them being No. 13000, No. 13065 and No. 42859. No. 13000 (Later 2700 then 42700) the first of the class to be built is preserved as part of the National Collection and is on Display at their museum in York. No. 13065 (Later 2765 then 42765) being the only Hughes Crab to operate under preservation on the East Lancashire Railway until 2018 and is currently under overhaul.[1][2][3][4]

No. 42859 (Originally 13159 then 2859) currently stored in a dismantled state after have several components were stolen and later found. It's boiler was scrapped by the owner to pay for the locomotive's storage and was also beyond operational repair.[1][2][3][4]
