The LEV2 (sometimes known as the R3) was a diesel railbus that was built by Leyland National for the United States of America.

History[]

The LEV2 was constructed by Leyland National for the United States of America, it was designed and built as a stretched version of the LEV1.

Following the export at around 1981, the LEV2 was used on an experimental test run for an extension for commuter service to Concord, New Hampshire on the MBTA's Boston Route. When that experiment was had came to an end in 1981, the LEV2 was sold to Amtrak for use on the Northeast Corridor, but it was quickly taken out of service following an accident at a crossing.

It was subsequently sold to the Steamtown Museum (Now known as the Steamtown National Historic Site) in Scranton, Pennsylvania for use as a shuttle, but it was unexpectedly damaged during repair work and was sold off to be scrapped instead. It was bought from the scrap dealer by the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad, it was eventually sold off to the Connecticut Trolley Museum, where it was subsequently scrapped.
