No. 110 'Burgundy' is a LB&SCR (London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway) Class E1 0-6-0 side-tank steam locomotive that was built by Brighton Works for the LB&SCR in March 1877.

Operational history[]

No. 110 was based at numerous depots around the south of England, becoming Southern Railway (SR) No. B110 after the Grouping in 1923. Withdrawn from service in February 1927, No. 110 was then sold to the Cannock and Rugeley Colliery Company. A new boiler to a different design was made and fitted by Bagnalls of Stafford, resulting in a change of appearance and an increase in power due to an increased boiler pressure of 175p.s.i. At the Cannock Wood Colliery No. 110 was renumbered as No. 9, using the inverted number plate from No. 6, an 1876 engine which had been sold.

As CRC No. 9 the engine gave many years of good service became a firm favorite with the CRC enginemen. It was used extensively on the trip workings to Hednesford Canal Basin and the Exchange sidings on the ex-London and North Western Railway's Cannock to Rugeley line.

Preservation[]

Withdrawn for a second time in 1963, the engine was sold to the Railway Preservation Society and stored at Hednesford until 1970 when it was moved to the Chasewater Railway. It remained a Chasewater until 1978 when it moved once again to the East Somerset Railway.

After a long overhaul, it returned to steam in 1993, but firebox problems caused it to be withdrawn from traffic prematurely in 1997.

After a cosmetic restoration, the locomotive was acquired by the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in 2012 as part of a deal which also saw Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 No. 46447 move to the East Somerset Railway.

In 2021, restoration work began on the E1 locomotive which is now known as No. W2 'Yarmouth', an identity that was previously worn by one of the E1's that used to work on the island in the 1930s.
