The KuMoYa 91 series was an electric tractor unit operated by the Japanese National Railways and its successor the West Japan Railway Company from 1967 to 1999.

History

With an increasing number of electrified lines electrified using AC current, four 72 series cars were converted into tractor units at Kōriyama and Suita Works in 1967; they were renumbered KuMoYa 91000 through KuMoYa 91003. All four cars were stationed at Mukomachi Depot.

When the JNR was privatized and divided into seven companies, KuMoYa 91000 and KuMoYa 91003 had already been withdrawn and scrapped; the remaining two cars came under the ownership of JR West. Due to their age they were replaced by the 145 series tractor units and were scrapped in 1999.

Design

The KuMoYa 91 series cars largely resembled that of the 72 series cars they were converted from.

Specifications

Construction was of steel. Despite the fact that the cars are DC only, they can run as a non-powered control car in AC sections of track.
