The KuMoYa 743 series was an electric tractor unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company from June 1992 to November 2014.
History[]
The KuMoYa 743 series was designed to be a locomotive that could tow 719-5000 series trains between Yamagata Rolling Stock Depot where they were stationed and Sendai General Rolling Stock Depot, where they were maintained, by pulling them through the Yamagata Shinkansen. One 143 series tractor unit, KuMoYa 143-3, was rebuilt by Kōriyama Works in 1992 into KuMoYa 743-1 for this purpose.
After completion, KuMoYa 743-1 was tested at Kōriyama Works and Sendai General Rolling Stock Depot and pulled a 719-5000 series train between Yamagata and Sendai. However, maintenance for the 719-5000 series was soon after moved to Yamagata, essentially putting KuMoYa 743-1 out of regular use; it would largely only be used from then on for switching duties, sweeping fallen leaves and defrosting overhead lines. KuMoYa 743-1 was towed to Sendai General Shinkansen Depot on 6 November 2014, arriving on 7 November 2014; KuMoYa 743-1 was scrapped on 8 November 2014.
Design[]
The KuMoYa 743 series car resembled other tractor units used by JNR. They featured the typical service car livery of wine with a white accent stripe.
Specifications[]
Construction was of steel. The car featured numerous changes in comparison to other tractor units used by the Japan Railways Group, featuring different bogies, electronic systems and safety equipment. This was the only non-Shinkansen train capable of running on Shinkansen lines.
