The KuMoHa 84 series was a series of three single-car electric multiple units operated by the West Japan Railway Company from March 1988 to July 1995.
History[]
The KuMoHa 84 series was conceived as a local train to be used on local services on the Uno Line between Chayamachi and Uno Stations due to their short distance. Three disused KuMoNi 83 series baggage and mail tractor units, numbered KuMoNi 83005, KuMoNi 83026 and KuMoNi 83027, out of service due to timetable revisions abolishing dedicated baggage and mail service, were converted between February and March 1988 at Hatabu Works, entering service in March 1988. The cars were replaced by 123 series cars KuMoHa 123-5 and KuMoHa 123-6 in 1995, which had been transferred from the Hanwa Line; the KuMoHa 84 series cars were withdrawn from regular service on 11 July 1995 before a farewell run was conducted on 23 July 1995. All three cars were scrapped in March 1996.

The KuMoHa 84 series cars generally retained the same basic design as the cars they were converted from.
Specifications[]
Much of the car's underbody electronics remain the same as the cars they were converted from. These were the only "old performance trains" ever built and operated by any of the Japan Railways Group's seven subsidiaries.
