The Kobe City Subway 6000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Kobe Municipal Transport Bureau since February 2019 on the Kobe City Subway Seishin-Yamate Line.

History[]

The 6000 series sets were the first rolling stock introduced on the Seishin-Yamate Line in some 26 years, with new on-board equipment and optimizations making the trains barrier-free and consuming less energy. The sets are constructed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries at their Hyōgo Plant, with construction beginning in 2018.

The trains are slated to replace all existing rolling stock on the Seishin-Yamate Line by 2022 and all existing rolling stock on the Hokushinkyuko Railway by 2023. As of 2021, 19 sets have been produced.

Design[]

The 6000 series cars use a conventional design with vertically mounted headlights; the exterior design of the sets was done by Ken Okuyama. The final design of the sets was chosen based on a poll conducted in 2016 to determine the design of these sets, with three design proposals labeled A, B and C; proposal B was ultimately chosen. The design language conveyed on the set features a "rounded shape which would not feel out of place in a city-style environment", with the coloring "giving a sense of security".

Specifications[]

Construction of the cars is of an aluminum alloy based on Kawasaki's efACE technology. The sets use a hybrid SiC-IGBT system manufactured by Hitachi; these units produce a hissing sound.
