The Kobe City Subway 5000 series is a Japanese linear motored city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Kobe Municipal Transport Bureau since July 2001 on the Kobe City Subway Kaigan Line.
History[]
The 5000 series sets were the first rolling stock introduced on the Kobe City Subway's Kaigan Line, the third linear motored line in Japan. 40 total cars were built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Hyōgo from 2000 to 2001, with the first set being introduced on 7 July 2001. All sets remain in service, with minor refurbishment works taking place in 2016.
Design[]
The 5000 series cars use a streamlined design with a raked front. The design of the sets was based on a four-point system, with the vehicle design expected to give a warm feeling, one that is people- and eco-friendly, one with a simple design and one which is easy and cheap to maintain.
Specifications[]
Construction of the cars is of an aluminum alloy. The sets use an IGBT system manufactured by Mitsubishi; these units produce a hissing sound which steps up in pitch.
